The Sapphires (2013) — AustraliaThe Sapphires (2013) — Australia

This fluffy movie doesn't pretend to be anything other than what it is, a feel-good story about an unlikely musical group called the Sapphires. "Based on a true story," the film is set in 1968 aboriginal Australia, a time and place of government-sanctioned racist policies. Three sisters and their cousin escape the limited horizons of their desolate homeland by forming a musical group that wins a few auditions, then goes to Vietnam to play gigs for the soldiers. There are a series of subplots about sibling rivalry, their besotted manager, soldierly love interests, and the racism of the day. Still, this film might have some interest for baby boomer music lovers with a social conscience. And I note that Rotten Tomatoes gave it a whopping 93% rating on its tomatometer.
